Carbon-based GDL is irreversibly oxidized to CO₂ within hours at >1.6 V in PEM electrolysis environment. Titanium fiber felt is the only material that simultaneously achieves:

  • Porosity 60–80% (optimal bubble detachment)
  • Electrical conductivity >2,000 S/cm (lower than bulk Ti but 50× better than sintered powder plates)
  • Corrosion current <1 μA/cm² at 2.2 V, 90°C for >80,000 hours
